EXCLUSIVE: REAL REASON CBS IS KEEPING GAYLE KING — SHE TOOK A MASSIVE PAYCUT
50% SLASH, BUT WAY LESS WORK IN NEW PART-TIME ROLE KEEPS KING IN THE FOLD
Amid swirling speculation about Gayle King’s future at CBS, sources tell me the “CBS Mornings” co-host has agreed to a major shake-up in her role — taking a 50% pay cut while moving into a lighter, part-time schedule.
“Gayle called the shots,” one insider said. “She knew exactly what she wanted — less work, less stress, but still the spotlight.”
“CBS loves her, but they also needed to make adjustments,” another source explained. “This was a perfect compromise. She keeps her profile, they cut costs, everyone wins.”
The move comes after CBS brought in Bari Weiss as news chief last October. Weiss, known for bold personnel changes, has already promoted King’s co-host Tony Dokoupil to the anchor chair of “CBS Evening News” and recruited veteran journalist Matt Gutman from ABC.
King’s contract was set to expire in May, fueling rumors she might exit the morning show. In October, she addressed the chatter, saying, “All I can say is this: From what I’m being told inside this building … all I’ve been told by everybody in this building is that they want me here. They like the job I’m doing. I like the job I’m doing!”
Sources say negotiations between King’s team and CBS focused on aligning her workload with the network’s new cost-cutting measures.
“She didn’t just take a pay cut,” one source said. “She traded hours, meetings, and daily grind for the freedom to do special segments and interviews she actually wants to do.”
The result: King will continue at CBS, but in a role more akin to a NBC/Hoda –style contributor — high-profile, but part-time.
“She’s basically moving into a ‘special projects’ role,” another insider said. “She can still headline big interviews, still be a face for the network, but she won’t be chained to a morning show desk five days a week.”
“It’s a win-win,” a network executive added. “Gayle keeps her reputation, CBS keeps a marquee name, and the viewers don’t lose her presence entirely.”
As of January 2026, King’s reported annual salary is $10 million — down from her previous $13–$15 million, reflecting the 50% reduction.
The takeaway: Gayle King isn’t going anywhere. She’s simply trading big bucks for a more manageable workload — and CBS is keeping one of its most valuable faces in the fold.
“She’s still the heart of CBS News,” one insider said. “Just a smarter, happier, less stressed version of herself.”
