EXCLUSIVE: MICHELLE & BARACK BACK IN COUPLES THERAPY! FORMER FIRST COUPLE FIGHTING TO SAVE MARRIAGE
Behind the #RelationshipGoals: “They’re Working Through It — Just Like Everyone Else”
Michelle and Barack Obama are once again seeking professional help to strengthen their marriage — a relationship that even Michelle admits has been far from picture-perfect.
According to a source close to the couple, the Obamas have quietly returned to couples therapy in recent months as they navigate a new chapter of their post-White House life — one filled with speaking tours, book deals, and the pressures of living up to their “perfect” public image.
“They love each other deeply, but marriage is work,” the source said. “They’re committed to doing that work — even now.”
Michelle first revealed their history with counseling back in 2018, admitting that after the birth of daughters Malia and Sasha, therapy helped her “explore [her] own sense of happiness” and reshape how she viewed love and partnership.
“You go because you think the counselor is going to help you make your case against the other person… and lo and behold, counseling wasn’t that at all,” Michelle told Oprah Winfrey at the time.
Now, sources say that the couple has returned to reconnect as empty nesters — and as two individuals evolving on separate yet intertwined paths.
“Barack’s always been comfortable with distance, and Michelle’s always been about presence,” a friend of the couple shared. “That dynamic hasn’t changed, even all these years later.”
The pair, who recently celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary, have kept their struggles largely private, but Michelle has spoken out about the realities of long-term relationships, urging people to ditch the fantasy of a “perfect marriage.”
“People see the hand-holding and the cute Instagram captions,” the friend said. “But behind the scenes, it’s two people choosing each other every day — and some days are harder than others.”
While neither Michelle nor Barack has publicly commented on their current therapy sessions, those closest to them say it’s not a sign of trouble — it’s a sign of strength.
“They’re not breaking up,” the source confirmed. “They’re doubling down.”
Because even when you're Barack and Michelle Obama — it turns out, love still takes work.
