Long before daytime television crowned Ellen DeGeneres the queen of afternoon TV, NBC executives were eyeing an even more unpredictable star: Sarah Ferguson.
Sources tell Naughty But Nice that two NBC executives quietly traveled to the UK to explore whether Ferguson could front her own American daytime talk show. At first, insiders say, the network was thrilled. Fergie’s royal status, larger-than-life personality, and chaotic charm seemed tailor-made for television.
Then came the trip executives never forgot.
“Sarah suddenly announced she needed to go to London for a few days,” one insider says. “The next thing they knew, she had left the NBC executives alone with Beatrice and Eugenie.”
According to sources, Ferguson vanished for nearly two days with little explanation, leaving the stunned television executives unexpectedly caring for her daughters.
“These folks flew overseas to negotiate a television deal,” another insider says. “Instead, they found themselves acting like royal babysitters. Nobody could believe it.”
Insiders claim Ferguson eventually returned as though nothing unusual had happened.

“There was no apology, no explanation — that was classic Fergie chaos,” says the source.
Friends say Ferguson often used the phrase “going into the fire” whenever she felt overwhelmed or wanted to abruptly escape a situation.
NBC did eventually tape a pilot with Ferguson, but insiders say executives ultimately decided her unpredictability was too risky for daytime television. The network later moved ahead with The Ellen DeGeneres Show instead.
“They loved Sarah’s energy,” the insider adds. “But they realized very quickly they could never trust her.”
