EXCLUSIVE: DIANE VON FURSTENBERG ALWAYS KNEW BARRY DILLER WAS GAY — “THIS ISN’T A SCANDAL,” SAYS SOURCE
There were no secrets — only love.
In a bombshell essay released ahead of his memoir Who Knew, media mogul Barry Diller has officially come out as gay at 83, but #ShuterScoop can confirm what those closest to the couple have known for years: his wife of 24 years, fashion icon Diane von Furstenberg, always knew — and fully supported his decision to go public.
“Diane’s always known,” a longtime fashion world insider tells #ShuterScoop. “She’s met several of his boyfriends over the years. Their relationship was never about hiding — it was about mutual respect and a deep, unique love.”
Far from being blindsided, Diane has been encouraging Barry to tell his story on his own terms for years. “She wanted him to reveal as much as he can in the book, to tell his truth before someone else did,” says the source. “She believes in honesty and owning your narrative.”
In the candid memoir, the IAC Chairman writes: “While there have been a good many men in my life, there has only ever been one woman. And she didn’t come into my life until I was 33 years old.”
Diller — long the subject of whispers in elite media and Manhattan social circles — finally addresses the rumors head-on, but makes it clear that his relationship with Diane was never for show.
“It was a unique and complete love,” he writes. “It was never a conflict for me to love Diane and also be attracted to men.”
The couple first met in 1974, drifted apart in the ’80s, reconnected in 1991, and married in 2001. Though they didn’t have children together, Diller embraced Diane’s two children from her previous marriage as his own.
Insiders close to the couple say this public acknowledgment won’t change their bond — if anything, it strengthens it.
“They’ve always had their own kind of marriage,” a friend says. “They know everything about each other, and they’ve built a life on truth. That’s what makes it last.”
