EXCLUSIVE: CRAIG MELVIN NERVOUS AS HODA KOTB FILLS IN — “WHAT IF THE RATINGS GO UP?”
INSIDERS: “THIS IS A RISKY WEEK TO STEP AWAY FOR VACATION"
Hello, hello, hello…
Craig Melvin may be heading off on vacation — but behind the scenes, insiders say the timing suddenly feels… risky.
With Hoda Kotb sliding into the co-anchor chair alongside Savannah Guthrie next week, nerves are already bubbling inside the building.
“This is not the moment you want to leave your seat,” one insider says. “All eyes are on the ratings right now.”
And that’s exactly the problem.
“If the numbers go up while he’s gone? That’s not just awkward — it’s dangerous,” the source adds. “A big problem.”
What was supposed to be a routine break is now being viewed internally as a serious misstep — one Craig himself is beginning to question.
“It felt like a gamble at the time,” the insider explains. “Now? It’s starting to look like a very foolish one.”
Competition with Good Morning America has never been tighter, and executives are scrutinizing every decimal point.
Which makes Hoda’s return even more loaded.
My forthcoming novel, It Started With A Whisper, is now available for pre-order
“Craig is a genuinely nice guy — but he doesn’t really play the game,” one insider says. “Hoda? She’s the opposite. All game… and not so nice.”
Translation?
This isn’t just a fill-in.
It’s a power play waiting to happen.
“Hoda knows that desk. She knows that audience,” the source says. “And she still has a very loyal fan base.”
And if she decides she wants more?
“If Hoda decides she wants her old job back, Craig won’t stand a chance,” the insider adds bluntly. “He’ll be elbowed out.”
“No one will say it outright,” another source says. “But everyone knows what’s at stake — including Craig.”
And the idea that morning TV is one big, happy family?
Not quite.
“It’s competitive,” the source says. “Very competitive. People want airtime. Influence. Job security.”
Publicly, of course, it’s all polished smiles.
Craig has even joked he won’t be watching while he’s away — but insiders say that may not last.
“He’s already second-guessing the decision,” one source reveals. “Something just feels off. Don’t be surprised if he starts thinking about cutting the trip short.”
Because next week?
It could change everything.
“Vacations are supposed to be relaxing,” the insider says. “This one might keep him up at night.”
Cheers,
Rob Shuter
And remember… if you’re going to be naughty, you’ve got to be nice. 💋

I’ve known Craig since he was in college. He is genuinely a very nice person. I hope he’s able to hold his seat.
Thank you. But where is Savannah this morning? I hope if she is out due to her mom, it's some good news, such as that could be...
