DENZEL WASHINGTON, JAKE GYLLENHAAL, AND KIERAN CULKIN SNUBBED IN 2025 TONY AWARDS — HOLLYWOOD HEAVYWEIGHTS LEFT OFF NOM LIST
“Othello” completely shut out as insiders say Broadway’s elite are tired of star-studded vanity plays with $900 ticket prices
The 2025 Tony Award nominations dropped this week — and with them came a brutal blow to some of Hollywood’s biggest names.
Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Kieran Culkin were completely snubbed, despite buzzy runs in major productions, stunning fans and insiders alike.
Washington and Gyllenhaal’s “Othello” — once hailed as a blockbuster prestige play — was entirely shut out, despite its record-breaking $2.8 million preview week. Some theater insiders say the sky-high ticket prices (some seats going for $900+) and the show’s frosty reception in New York's Broadway community didn’t help.
“Theater voters don’t like being treated like tourists,” one source tells #ShuterScoop. “It felt more like a Hollywood flex than a Broadway revival.”
Meanwhile, Culkin — fresh off an Oscar win and Emmy for Succession — failed to land a nod for his gritty turn in “Glengarry Glen Ross,” even as co-star Bob Odenkirk scored his first-ever nomination. Stand-up star Bill Burr was also left off the list.
Also snubbed? Idina Menzel, Jim Parsons, Robert Downey Jr., Julianna Margulies, Adrienne Warren, and Nick Jonas, proving this year’s Tony nominations weren’t impressed by big names alone.
While Hollywood fumbled, Broadway favorites like Audra McDonald made history with her 11th nomination, and rising stars Nicole Scherzinger, Sadie Sink, and Sarah Snook earned well-deserved recognition.
As one Broadway veteran put it:
“It’s the Tonys. You’ve got to earn it on the stage — not the screen.”
